THE PRINCIPLES OF THE STUDIO
PURPOSE
Nothing merely decorative for decoration’s sake.
Every object begins by asking what purpose it serves and how its design can serve that purpose well.
ORDER
The whole governs the parts.
Typography, imagery, material, color, scale, and ornament should belong together rather than compete for attention.
MATERIAL
The material matters.
Paper should feel worthy of writing upon. A journal should invite use. A printed image should respect the original work. An object should be appropriate to the purpose for which it was made.
DURABILITY
Made to remain.
Where possible, the Studio seeks materials and designs worthy of keeping rather than immediate disposal.
SACRED WITHOUT BECOMING “RELIGIOUS MERCH”
Sacred Things Deserve Thoughtful Design. The Christian artistic tradition is extraordinarily rich.
The Studio approaches sacred imagery, Scripture, saints, symbols, and the liturgical year with reverence for that inheritance rather than treating them simply as decoration. Our aim is to create objects that are recognizably Catholic without reducing sacred things to slogans. That last sentence captures something you’ve repeatedly wanted from Imago Dei. It also distinguishes your cards, prints, ornaments, etc. from a lot of generic religious merchandise without criticizing anyone else.
